The new multi-nationalism of Last Night of the Proms; a jolly good thing, really
Monday, September 13, 2010 at 10:18AM Did anyone else, I wonder, note the wide range of flags being waved in the Albert Hall and Hyde Park on during the Last Night of the Proms on Saturday? Watching on television I counted flags from German, the EU, Uruguay, Japan, Cornwall, Ireland, Canada, Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, Brazil - and one very large Union Jack in shades of pink. Of course the conventional Union flags were dominant, but it seemed an interesting and modern development to see people from many different countries taking part in what has traditionally been a theatrical show of patriotism. I suppose it's mostly a tourism thing, but there's something cheering about people celebrating their own sense of nationality under the banner of someone else's. It also encourages those who believe that left alone to get on with it, people of different nations rub along together without too much friction.
