The Half-Shot Latte: Why It’s Cool To Be Caffeine-Averse

We’re still getting used to hearing orders for a “double espresso with a bit of hot milk in a separate jug so I can add it myself” or a “grande flat soy latte to take away, please”, but now there appears to be a new middle class neurosis to contend with at the coffee counter: the half-shot.

When once it was admirable to be incredibly busy and fuelled by caffeine (“I can’t even think before three coffees the size of my head”), there are now people so busy and tired that they “just can’t take the caffeine these days”; it makes them a jittery wreck and all they’re thinking about is how to get through this hectic day and stay calm. They’ll have a half-shot, though, because they like the taste, but their well-being is becoming more of a priority now that life’s so hectic. ‘Efficient and healthy’ is the new ‘busy and frazzled’.
