Disappointing; we were rather looking forward to May vs The Sturge

Secret Snob #6: The soap that is positively pop art

In our family, while publicly shunning any knowledge of soap operas, except perhaps the Archers Omnibus accompanied by a full English on Sunday morning, we secretly yearn for the perfect bar of soap. Not one of those over-priced, organic, trying-too-hard things. An honest, decent, traditional soap.

On a recent visit to the Lake District, our delightful accommodation in a Glam Pod lacked that most essential of cleansing solutions. So, off we sped to our favourite supermarket, Booths in Windermere, where we tried, in vain, to resist the fantastic range of locally sourced and unusual products (they even have a Forgotten Foods range), and eventually arrived at the bathing requisites aisle.

Yes, there were the usual suspects, but nestling among them, it's packaging denoting style, understatement and a very 20th century Britishness, were bars of Droyt's Original Moisturising Glycerine Soap. Droyt's of Chorley have been making this soap since the 1920's using an old family recipe, the eau de cologne scent reminds us of everything that is clean and delicate and lovely in the world. It even claims to 'help with minor skin problems' which can't be bad. A bar of glycerine soap is a thing of transparent beauty, and this proved no exception, it was when we opened the packet that we truly fell in love. It is iconic. It is yellow. And, stamped on its front, in glorious early industrial upper case font, GLYCERINE.

It wouldn't have looked out of place in Andy Warhol's bathroom. It made us smile, and proved to be an excellent latherer. Just lovely.
